‘Know Thyself’ has been a goal – a telos - driving the human search for meaning. Yet, formal academic practices have become congealed with various epistemological-political biases which delimit what kind of systems and methodologies of understanding the Self, will be considered legitimate ‘philosophies’ or ‘theories’. This talk will challenge these biases, and present an ancient Indian form of quest journey – the parikramā – as a practice that is a systematic theory of the Self in itself; using the unorthodox method(s) and material(s) as an experimental attempt to accommodate hitherto unacknowledged knowledge systems in the discourse of mainstream critical practices.
